Early Childhood Care & Education (ECCE)

Overview
Singapore’s pre-school landscape comprises both kindergartens and child care centres.

Kindergartens
Kindergartens provide pre-school developmental programmes for children aged about 2 years to children below 7 years of age. The programmes comprise at least Kindergarten 1 and Kindergarten 2. In addition, kindergartens may also provide programmes for Playgroup, Pre-Nursery (or Nursery 1), and Nursery (or Nursery 2) five days a week. Most kindergarten sessions range between 2 to 3 hours for Playgroup and Pre-Nursery, and between 3 to 4 hours for Nursery and Kindergartens 1 & 2.

Child Care Centres
Child care centres provide child care services and pre-school developmental programmes for children aged from 18 months to children below 7 years old. Several centres also provide infant care programmes for infants aged from 2 to 18 months old. Centres may offer full-day, half-day, or flexible programmes in order to cater to different parents’ working schedules.

To embark on a career in the Early Childhood Care & Education (ECCE) sector, you must first equip yourself with the relevant WSQ certification in order to qualify as a full-fledged pre-school professional.

To attain the relevant qualifications to work as infant educarers, early years educarers, teacher assistants, or pre-school teachers, you must enrol in the relevant programmes – WSQ Higher Certificate in Infant Care (WSQ HCIC), WSQ Advanced Certificate in Early Years (WSQ ACEY), WSQ Advanced Certificate in Early Childhood Care & Education (WSQ ACECCE), or the WSQ Professional Diploma in Early Childhood Care & Education (WSQ PDECCE) – at WSQ-approved Training Organisations (ATOs).

Mid-career switchers with local tertiary qualifications can enrol in the accelerated programme – Professional Conversion Programme for Childcare Teachers or Kindergarten Teachers and pursue the WSQ Professional Diploma in Early Childhood Care & Education (Childcare) [WSQ PDECCE (Childcare)] or WSQ Professional Diploma in Early Childhood Care & Education (Kindergarten Teaching) [also known as Diploma (Conversion) in Kindergarten Education – Teaching (NVKET)].

If you have the passion to work with children, we invite you to join the ECCE industry as early childhood professionals. Early childhood professionals hold the key to inspiring young minds and preparing them for their future and for life.

WSQ programmes provide training in the skills and competencies required for the following job roles:

  • Educarer
  • Pre-School Teacher

WSQ certifications are awarded by SkillsFuture Singapore (SSG), and recognised by Workforce Singapore, Early Childhood Development Agency, and the industry.
