Workplace Literacy (WPL) - improves your English literacy (Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing)
Workplace Numeracy (WPN) - improves your Numeracy
There are eight language proficiency levels in the WPLN series starting from pre-beginning (Level 1) through proficient use of the language (Level 8). A Statement of Attainment (SOA) will be issued to certify your current level of proficiency for each test you take.
Before applying for WPLN training, you will have to go through an assessment to be placed into the right training level.
The WPLN Assessment can be taken as different combinations of the following five components:
Each component takes about 30 to 60 minutes to complete.
Reading | Assesses your ability to read and to understand in both personal and work environments |
Listening | Assesses your ability to listen and to understand in both personal and work environments |
Speaking | Assesses your ability to speak and to be understood in both personal and work environments |
Writing | Assesses your ability to write and to be understood in both personal and work environments |
Numeracy | Assesses your ability to use mathematical skills in both personal and work environments |
Training recommendation will be based on the selected WPL or WPN training pathway with relevant modalities for WPLN assessment.
Course Type | Modalities covered in the course | Modalities to be taken for assessment onwards |
WPL (Comprehensive) | Reading, Listening, Speaking, Writing | Reading, Listening, Speaking, Writing |
WPL (Writing) | Reading, Writing | Reading, Writing |
WPL (Conversational) | Reading, Listening, Speaking | Reading, Listening, Speaking |
WPN | Numeracy | Numeracy |
The WPLN assessments are computer-based. Assistance will be given to participants with little or no computer skills to help them get used to the use of the mouse and have a go at the practice assessments.
Who can take the assessment?
You will be awarded an SOA for the respective level of Literacy (Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing) and Numeracy attained.
Statement of Attainment (SOA)
For Workplace Literacy (WPL), you will achieve up to four SOAs, instead of one, upon completing the Workplace Literacy (WPL) Assessment. This is because the WPL Assessment assesses your Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing abilities separately. An SOA is issued for each of the four components assessed.
For Workplace Numeracy (WPN), you will receive an SOA upon completing the WPN assessment.
For Workplace Skills (WPS) training, you will receive a Statement of Attainment (SOA) upon completing a WPS training module and being assessed as competent at the end of the training. This means that you are certified by the SSG as being able to perform a task appropriate to your occupational level and work demands.
Career Readiness Certificate (CRC)
Upon obtaining the required SOAs under WPL, WPN and WPS/EDGE, you are eligible to apply for a Career Readiness Certificate (CRC).
The CRC also offers flexibility by including a limited number of industry-specific training drawn from other WSQ industry skills courses. A total of ten SOAs are required to achieve the CRC.
